Many do not understand that self abuse is not always about punishing oneself, or blocking out emotional pain. True, most of the time it begins that way, but eventually it turns from a coping skill to an addiction.
for example: scars. you will find that some cutters and burners will be extremely possessive of their scars. i myself find that when i was doing such things, i saw my body as a canvas of sorts and any spots left unmarred was an unfinished piece of my work (buts that's just me).
Suicide I'm afraid is much more complicated, so much in fact that unless specified to the greatest extent, one cannot truly come near the definite reason behind thoughts, urges and actions of suicide. it all depends on the person's personality, history, and thought habits.
